Jamaica keeps death penalty on its books

Washington/Kingston - After heated debate, the Jamaican Parliament Tuesday voted to keep the death penalty for particularly violent crimes, according to the Jamaican Gleaner newspaper online.

The country suffers under increasing numbers of violent crimes, officials said, with the number of murders climbing to 143 in October - ten more than in September.

The last execution in Jamaica was carried out in 1988. (dpa)
