Malaysian state government committee to study woes of Tamil schools'
Kuala Lumpur, May 7 : A Tamil education sub-committee has been created to look into the problems faced by Tamil schools in Malaysia.
State education committee chairman Dr P. Ramasamy said the sub-committee, to be headed by Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturer Dr K. Anbalakan, has been tasked with studying the problems faced by the 29 Tamil schools in the state and to come up with a comprehensive report within the next three months.
Ramasamy said the sub-committee would look into assisting Tamil schools which have been neglected.
The New Strait Times quoted him as saying that the enrolment in Tamil schools was high, but noted that more new Tamil schools were needed in urban areas as most Indian families have moved out of rural areas.
"At one point, there were 1,500 Tamil schools in the country, but now the figure is down to just 523. We also want to change the status of Tamil schools, from partially-assisted schools to fully-aided schools," he said. (ANI)
