Mercedes introducing new diesel engine generation

Mercedes introducing new diesel engine generationStuttgart - Mercedes is introducing a new diesel engine generation this autumn starting with a four cylinder in the C 250 CDI that offers higher performance and lower fuel consumption, the car maker has announced.

The BlueEfficiency Prime Edition has an output of 150 kW/204 hp, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in seven seconds on the way to a top speed of 250 km/h. At the same time, Mercedes lists an average fuel consumption of only 5.2 litres per 100 km with a carbon dioxide emission figure of 138 grams per kilometre.

Mercedes engineers optimised the engine with several measures including a maximum ignition pressure of 200 bar, a new piezo-injector concept, variable oil spray nozzles and water pump and dual-stage supercharging.

Apart from the additional power output, the engine also offers improved torque build-up from low engine speeds which is especially useful in everyday driving situations at low speeds.

Beginning this year, Mercedes is replacing four of the existing four-cylinder diesel engines.

Apart from the C-Class, the engine will also be installed in the E-Class, in the new GLK-Class and in the future E-Class Coupé. The new engine will also replace higher-displacement engines in heavier vehicles, where it will help reduce consumption through downsizing.

Other fuel-saving measures include airflow-enhancing exterior mirror housings, tyres with rolling resistance reduced by 10 per cent and more efficient energy management for the adaptive power steering. (dpa)
