Striking Romanian steelworkers ordered back to jobs
Bucharest - Romanian steelworkers striking for more pay from ArcelorMittal returned to work Wednesday after a court ordered them to suspend their two-day-old walkout, news reports said.
The Solidaritatea union, which claims about 4,000 workers at the plant in Galati, began the stoppage Monday, demanding at least three times the 10-per-cent pay hike offered by the world's largest steelmaker.
Other unions representing about three quarters of the nearly 14,000 workers have accepted ArcelorMittal's offer.
A Galati court ordered a 30-day halt to walkouts at the plant, which Mittal bought from the Romanian government in 2001 before the Indian-based steelmaker merged with Arcelor of Luxembourg.
On Friday, some 13,000 workers at Renault SA's Dacia unit ended a nearly three-week strike after winning pay raises and a profit- sharing pledge from the automaker. (dpa)
