Haitian Senate approves new prime minister

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The Haitian Senate approved economist Michele Pierre Louis as the new prime minister of the impoverished Caribbean country.

Supported by 12 senators with five abstentions, her appointment amid ongoing unrest establishes a new government, three months after Haiti's last prime minister was ousted by the Senate in response to food riots.

The upper chamber had rejected two previous nominees by President Rene Preval to head a new government.

Then-prime minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis was toppled in April.

Pierre Louis is the second woman to head a Haitian government, after Rosny Smarth served as prime minister in the 1990s. (dpa)
