Chennai, Jan. 28 : The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) criticized the Center over External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee''s visit to Colombo after the Sri Lankan army''s successful operation against the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).
Hundreds of MDMK activists took to streets here to protest against the Sri Lankan military's offensive against the Tamil rebels.
MDMK's general secretary Y. Gopalaswamy(Vaiko), while criticizing Mukherjee's visit to Sri Lanka said that he (Mukherjee) had actually gone to Colombo to participate in the victory celebrations of the Sri Lankan government over the Tamil rebels.
Chennai, Jan 27: The Southern Railways ran a couple of heritage train trips using a steam locomotive of 1947 vintage, named ''Shahanshah'' from Royapuram Railway Station in Chennai to Tambaram, a suburb on the outskirts of the city on the occasion of Republic Day.
The objective was to provide people a picture of trains that chugged along the tracks at the time of India''s Independence.
Chennai, Jan 24, : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said on Saturday that corrective measures have to be undertaken to ensure high domestic demand.
The Union Home Minister while delivering a lecture after launching the Bharatiya Yuva Shakthi Trust here, said, "India is not facing recession but only a slowdown and creative measures have to be undertaken to ensure high domestic slowdown."
Chidambaram emphasized on taking corrective measures and said: "While the government is taking fiscal measures, the RBI is taking monetary measures. Government and RBI should work together to work out more stimulus packages."
Chennai, Jan 23 : Tamilnadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi has moved a resolution in the State assembly, urging the Centre to take tougher steps to ensure a cease fire in Sri Lanka.
The resolution has been touted the final request to the United Progressive Alliance.
Karunanidhi has warned that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will hold a general council meeting to initiate further action inn case the Government fails to act on the issue.
