Athens - Greek riot police fired tear gas and clashed with protesting farmers at the port of Piraeus for a second day Tuesday after farmers attempted to break through a police barricade.

More than 2,000 farmers from the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete remained camped out at Piraeus, the main port on the mainland, throughout Tuesday.

Hundreds more had joined them after arriving on passenger ferries early Tuesday to protest low commodity prices and demand fresh subsidies.

Athens - More than 1,000 farmers from the southern Mediterranean island of Crete remained camped out at Greece's main port of Piraeus on Tuesday for the second day, determined to drive their tractors in protest through Athens demanding financial help.

The farmers, along with their farm equipment and tractors, arrived in Athens on three vessels from Crete Monday and ended up scuffling with riot police at the port after they prevented them from off- loading their tractors.

Athens - Gunmen opened fire at a Greek police station early Tuesday, but there were no casualties, news reports said.



The attack took place in the western suburb of Korydallos and Greece's most dangerous left-wing terrorist group, Revolutionary Struggle, was suspected of having carried it out, the reports said.



According to the reports, the shots fired were from a similar semi-automatic weapon that the group had used in the past. A hand grenade was also thrown at the police station.

Athens  - More than 1,000 farmers arrived in Athens with their tractors from the southern Mediterranean island of Crete on Monday, ready to take their protest against low commodity prices to the Greek parliament.

The farmers, arriving on three vessels from Crete, reportedly scuffled with riot police at the port of Pireaus who prevented them from off-loading their tractors. The farmers said they are determined to ride their tractors into the centre of Athens towards the Ministry of Development.

Belgrade  - Greek authorities banned Serbian hauliers from entering Greece on Sunday, in a row over higher road charges for foreign firms using Serbian roads, Belgrade media have reported.

Ten days ago Athens again warned Belgrade that it would not renew Serbian permits because Serbia continues to violate a treaty on road tolls that it signed with Greece in
2002. According to the treaty, charges were to be the same for both Greek and Serbian drivers.

Although Belgrade has not implemented the treaty, Serbian officials said they were surprised by the Greek move.

Athens - Greek farmers protesting low prices for their products continued to block the main border crossing with Bulgaria on Friday.

Thousands of farmers lifted their road blocks in the northern prefectures of Macedonia and Thrace after accepting an emergency aid package by the government.

In the past week and a half, thousands of farmers used their tractors to create more than 70 roadblocks along all the main highways across Greece.
