Chennai, Feb. 24 : Protesting Chennai lawyers have demanded immediate action against police officials who carried out Thursday‘s baton charging on lawyers in the Madras High Court premises.
Members of the Madras High Court Bar Association have decided to go on a two-day hunger protest besides submitting a petition to the State Human Rights Commission to demand appropriate action against the police for the incident.

Lawyers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry went on an indefinite hunger strike outside the Madras high court on NSC Bose Road on Monday. They also decided to indefinitely boycott work in protest against the "assault on the judiciary" by Chennai Police on February 19.
"We are staging the fast outside the high court premises after being requested to do so by some judges. A CBI team is expected to assess the situation, including damages caused by the police action. A panel of judges also proposes to evaluate the situation. Hence, the judges did not want any unpleasantness on the court premises," Madras High Court Advocates' Association president Paul Kanakaraj said.
Coimbatore, Feb 22 : Around three thousand volunteers, both men and women, of all ages took part in a rally held here in support of Tamils being killed in Sri Lanka.
They formed a human chain and marched through the streets of the city on Saturday voicing their protest against genocide by Sri Lankan authorities.
Chennai, Feb 20 : Over 150 lawyers were arrested on Friday for participating in a protest march outside the Tamil Nadu secretariat. They were agitating against the violence in the Madras High Court complex on Thursday.
Madras Bar Association President S. Prabhakaran was also arrested.
Earlier, the lawyers' agitation issue dominated proceedings in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
As soon as the session started, opposition members demanded that the Question Hour be postponed to discuss Thursday's violence in which more than 100 lawyers were injured.
New Delhi, Feb 18 : The Lok Sabha was adjourned for 25 minutes on Wednesday after Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) lawmakers raised a hue and cry over remarks made by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Mukherjee had stated in the house that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has caused "much damage" to the Tamil community and it should lay down arms.
